Ung í Føroyum (’The Young in the Faeroes’) –cultural rally in Torshavn

In February, sixty Faeroese youngsters, aged between 13 and 18 years, spent a cultural weekend in the Nordic House (Norðurlandahúsið) in Torshavn. The young people had an opportunity to show what they can do in terms of arts, and they could apply their creativity in their favourite fields of art under the guidance of professional artists. With its closing performance, the Ung í Føroyum (’The Young in the Faeroes’) cultural rally bore witness to happy creativity and community feeling among the youngsters.

The initiator of the cultural rally, project leader Hedvig Westerlund-Kapnas and the writer Rakel Helmsdal, say that this year Ung í Føroyum is held for the eighth year running. The young participants are selected from all over the Faeroe Islands. From Friday until Sunday afternoon, the young people try out their ideas in workshops on music, theatre, visual arts, video, dance and writing. Professional artists instruct the participants and give advice, but it is up to the youngsters to come up with ideas and the forms of presenting them. The young participants appreciate the opportunity to develop their artistic skills under professional guidance.

In addition to artistic skills, Ung í Føroyum has the ambition to develop the young people’s social skills and stimulate the community feeling. Most of the participants did not know each other initially, thus an intensive group work and shared accommodation required adaptation skills and tolerance to differences. The closing performance of high artistic quality was a good proof of the fact that both the artistic and social training had been really fruitful.

The best thing was that all the people were so nice and cool; we had a wonderful time together. The second best thing: one could concentrate on one’s thing and get acquainted with new people.

The best thing was that one could learn more about dance. The second best thing: meeting new friends.
