Exposed children and young people are offered better access to culture in Denmark

48 mill. DKK granted by the Danish Government will create equal opportunities for all the children and young people to enjoy culture. The money will be used for buying book packages for exposed children and establishing new community centres in exposed residential areas, and the work is coordinated the Danish Library and Media Agency.

A community centre is a resource available to families that otherwise find it difficult use the opportunities offered by the society. Their advantage is that the community centres are open and voluntary resources located in the places where such people are living. The centres offer, for example, counselling with regard to health issues, children’s well-being and participation in networks. They also offer coaching, language courses and other activities that stimulate children’s linguistic skills.

Free book packages

Within the framework of the programmes ’Book Start’ children are supplied with free packages of books, adapted to their age, in four rounds until the child reaches the age of six. The book packages are supplemented with a number of activities, some extra material and information to parents about children’s language and reading. The programmes ’Book Start’ are especially aimed at families that have week traditions of reading at home.
