Culture paths help pupils from Espoo to find new hobbies and interests

KULPS! is a culture and sports path that takes comprehensive school pupils from Espoo to cultural and sports venues in their home town. One cannot learn everything in the classroom; there are other things for which you simply have to leave the school and go and see them for yourself. Within the framework of the KULPS! programme one can visit various places, for example, sports facilities, cultural locations and libraries.

The culture and sports path includes pupil assignments and teacher instructions, created by using the Opit online learning platform, where study trips and local events are documented, so that, for example, the pupil's family can follow them as well.  KULPS! is free of charge, being part of basic education. Over their nine years in comprehensive school, Espoo pupils will come to know all of the major cultural and sports venues in Espoo. They may even find a new hobby or a new interest along the way.

Three culture paths

Sports path
The sports path supports and diversifies sports teaching and sports activities at school. It encourages pupils to try out different kinds of sports at different times of the year and in different environments. Pupils will visit not only the sports venues but also the natural environment and islands of Espoo. One example of the numerous sports paths is Arts Orienteering.  By finding the public works of art of EMMA in Espoo, pupils can discover a new aspect of the arts collection of their home city and the role of artworks in our everyday lives, and at the same time they use their orienteering skills on foot or by bicycle.

Library path
Visits to a public library under the guidance of library staff improve information-finding skills, which are necessary in the studying of all school subjects, and which support the studies of the mother tongue and literature, as well as media education.

Culture path
The culture path augments children's general knowledge and broadens their world view, supporting their development to become mature human beings and responsible as well as critical members of society. The culture path offers pupils experiences which constitute an active and life-long interface between the pupils and the realm of culture. The culture path includes two to three visits per year to some of the town's museums or cultural activities (exhibitions of art, concerts, films or theatre).
